Lakhpati Didi Journey

Beena Rai, resident of Talkharka Village in Regu Block, East Sikkim, comes from poor farmer family owns two acres of land. Her journey toward self-reliance began after joining a mobilization camp by State Rural Livelihoods Mission, leading to the formation of the Makhamali Self Help Group. Through the Group, Beena accessed multiple training sessions and financial loans totaling over INR 4,00,000, which she invested in enhancing her farming operations.
Beena’s farming journey is fraught with challenges such as small land holdings, seed availability, fertilizer access, irrigation issues, lack of mechanization, soil erosion, complex agricultural marketing, and capital scarcity.

Through training provided by the Horticulture Department, She mastered various farming techniques that significantly improved her productivity. These include crop spacing, regular weeding, timely manure application, mixed cropping, inter-cropping, integrated pest and nutrient management, and organic farming. Her adoption of these practices has not only elevated her farm’s output but also enhanced her family’s livelihood.
