Swati Chandrakant Mahadik, from Kaundhar Kalsur village in Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra, is an inspiring example of how self-help groups can transform lives. A member of the Vaghjai Self-Help Group under the Ghe Bharari Cluster Level Federation, Swati began her journey by joining the Umed Abhiyan, which gave her the platform to step beyond traditional roles. Starting with training in sewing, Swati created cloth bags, purse bags, and saree fall applications, earning her first income. She diversified her efforts by selling Pepsi and kulfi, gradually building confidence in her entrepreneurial abilities. Her breakthrough came when she and her Self-Help Group members embraced vermi-composting, a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilizers. They began with eight beds and now produce 26 tons of organic compost annually, Her leadership has been pivotal in organizing training, exhibitions, and market linkages, ensuring their products gain visibility. Her initiatives have not only boosted income for members but also addressed key environmental challenges in the village. Currently, Swati earns over Rs. 15,000 per month from her ventures. Her journey from a housewife to a mentor and entrepreneur exemplifies the power of determination and collective action, inspiring others to create change in their communities.
